Evolution, Revolution, of IT
The Evolution of IT and Echo systems!
Part 1 - History (or how the government accidentally did a good thing.)
Chris Smith - Tech Doctor and Wiz Kid (OK, I used to be a kid)6/9/2014 - Wheaton, IL. - Over the last 25+ years in the computer industry, I have witnessed many new technologies, strategies, mind shifts, tech revolutions and marketing schemes to file a multi-petabyte database. I am so old, I remember the first Year of the LAN back n the late 1980's. This was when the acceleration to the rate of Moore's Law really started on a vertical trajectory.
IBM was the king of computing and they would probably still be today had it not been for the Anti-Trust cases of the 1970's. A little known company named Microsoft was then allowed to become the largest
software company in the world by providing the Operating System (DOS) to IBM and striking a deal that created licensing versus ownership.
This was the first really big "revolution" to happen in the area of computing. The executives at IBM underestimated the growth of this market and then were afraid to do anything that would cause another long protracted court battle with the government. Few people realize that the case was eventually "dismissed without merit" in 1982. It was too late by then IBM had spent so much time defending itself that it would never recover and take prominence in the PC world. In retrospect the advances in computing over hat time made the original arguments obsolete. The same occurred when Microsoft found itself on the wrong end of the governments stick and lost a judgement in 2000 that paved the way for Google and others.
The more we protest the more we want everything to be just "there"!
Most of the cases centered around "unfair advantages" and such and in retrospect those were never going to last. technology has a way of working its way out. If Apple held any kind of larger market share, they would be a good candidate to be sued for their success.
Over time consumers wanted everything to be included. No separate things for printing, browsing or the like. Just let me "click, tap, swipe and Google" it to get my results. Even if all I was looking for was my own Facebook page, "I want it now!"
All this ubiquitous connectivity would lead to the largest companies getting bigger AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, and an environment where "social" now means you don't interact with humans! Technology (PC use) now occurs younger and younger as depicted in the following chart.

Pretty soon you will have to choose your technology when you choose the diapers! Babies are using iPads and Google tablets.
So as you look at what technology to use - look at history, look at the future and remember that there is always something better and newer coming in just a few months.
